2009 Girl's Fair

On Sunday May 17, 2009 at the Malcolm X Library in Southeastern San Diego, the ladies of Zeta Phi Beta Soririty Incorparated, Mu Sigma Zeta Chapter, held its 1st annual Girl's Fair. The purpose of this event was to bring in young girls currently living in foster care or group home settings, and teach them about empowerment. The young ladies traveled between five stations and learned simple techniques. There were 5 stations set up in the venue where groups of girls spent about 20 minutes at each. The first station was manicure and pedicure where the girl's learned about proper nail care; second was self esteem, where the girls learned how to be confident in themselves; third was stress management, here the girls learned how to cope with stressful sitations and be calm; fourth was nutrition. At this station the young ladies learned what a balanced and healthy diet was and how to eat properly; at the final station the girls learned about beauty and make up and had facial treatments administered by a Mary Kay consultant. There was also a session where the young ladies learned about hair maintenance from a fellow Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Brother from the Lambda Iota Sigma chapter. The days events began with a speech from an adoptive/foster care mother who read and gave all the girls a poem titled, "Our Deepest Fear," by Marianne Willamson. The event ended with a power lecture form our Basileus, Soror Lena Smith, and the girls all received certificates for participating as well as gifts bags, a specialized CD containing several empowering songs, and a motto, which is, "I am a unique and beautiful person. I deserve to be happy and successful. I will continue to learn to take care of my entire self; mind, body and spirit. Today is the first day of the rest of my life and I will make it the best day ever!"
This event was truly a success and everyone had a great time!
